Help children hear individual sounds and connect them with letters using these CVC Phoneme Segmentation Cards and coordinating worksheets. Designed for kindergarten and first grade, this resource combines hands-on word building with phoneme segmentation, spelling, and writing practice.
Use the activities in literacy centers, small groups, morning tubs, or homeschool lessons. Select words that match the letter–sound relationships your learners have been taught, then guide them through saying, segmenting, building, and reading each word.

✏️ How to Use the CVC Phoneme Segmentation Cards
- Say it: Name the picture together and introduce the intended word.
- Segment it: Say the word and identify its individual sounds.
- Build it: Use letter tiles or magnetic letters to spell the word.
- Read it: Blend the sounds and read the completed word.
- Write it: Complete a picture worksheet or use the blank recording page to write the word and draw a matching picture.
Begin with a few CVC Phoneme Segmentation Cards and model the routine before children work independently. Extend practice by sorting cards by beginning sound, short vowel sound, or rhyme. The pages can also be used for partner activities, alphabet stamping, or teacher-led dictation.
Using words ending in x: Words such as box and six have three letters but four sounds because x represents /k/ /s/. Use the split-box alternatives when counting or tapping sounds. Children write one x across the dotted line in the final box. The original three-box versions provide letter spaces for word building and spelling.
