✏️ How to Use the Apple Sorting Activities

Print the mats and apple cards on cardstock. Laminate for durability, if desired, and cut out the circular cards. Print additional copies of the cards as needed.

Place the cards in a shallow sensory bin with a suitable filler, leaving some partly visible. Set one activity mat beside the bin and add optional child safe tongs or tweezers.

  • Sort by color: Find red, green, and yellow apple cards and place them on the matching crates.
  • Sort by size: Compare the apples and sort them into small, medium, and large groups.
  • Sort by color and size: Place each apple in the grid space that matches both attributes.
  • Continue patterns: Look at the printed examples and choose apple cards to extend each pattern.

The mats and cards can also be used directly on a tabletop without a sensory bin.

💡 Differentiation and More Ways to Play

Begin with two colors or two sizes. Gradually introduce more choices, sorting by both attributes, and the pattern challenge mat.

Extend the learning by sorting the same cards another way, finding an apple that does not belong, or creating a repeating pattern for a partner to continue. Encourage children to explain their choices using color and size vocabulary.
