- Search the sensory bin for the leaf colors shown.
- Count the correct quantity of each color.
- Place the leaves on the soup pot mat.
- Check the leaves against the recipe, then clear the mat and play again.
Children can collect the pieces with their fingers or use child-friendly tweezers or tongs for extra fine motor practice. Encourage them to move each leaf as they count and check one recipe row at a time.
🎲 More Ways to Play
- Roll and Make Soup: Choose a leaf color, roll a die, and add that many matching leaves to the pot.
- Make Your Own Recipe: Write numbers from 0 to 4 on a blank recipe card, then find and count the leaves to match. Keep each recipe to 10 leaves or fewer.
- Count and Compare: Make two groups of leaves and compare which has more, fewer, or the same number.
🍁 Leaf Soup Recipe Sensory Bin: Differentiation
Begin with recipe cards featuring quantities of 1 and 2. Introduce cards with 3 and 4 as children become more confident. Recipes containing zero help children explore the idea that 0 means none.
Use the blank recipe cards to create combinations that suit your learners. Children who are ready for an extra challenge can design a recipe for a partner to follow.
🌟 Educational Benefits
- Practices counting and one-to-one correspondence
- Connects written numbers with quantities
- Introduces zero as none
- Builds color recognition and matching skills
- Encourages comparing quantities using more, fewer, and the same
- Supports following visual directions and checking work
- Provides fine motor and hand-eye coordination practice
✂️ Leaf Soup Recipe Sensory Bin: Preparation and Storage
Print the materials on cardstock, laminate if desired, and cut apart the recipe cards and leaf pieces. Print two copies of the leaf pieces so you have enough for the recipes and dice activity.
Add brown crinkle paper and a few fabric fall leaves to a shallow tray, then tuck in the printed leaf pieces. Place the soup pot mat and recipe cards beside the tray. You can also use the activity without filler as a tabletop math center.
Keep the mat, cards, leaf pieces, and directions together in a labeled bag or container for easy reuse.
This leaf soup sensory bin gives children a familiar, playful way to revisit counting throughout your fall theme. Use it during preschool centers, morning tubs, or small group learning.
Happy Teaching! 😊
