✏️ How to Use the Back to School Pegboard Patterns
Provide a square pegboard with at least 10 rows and 10 columns and colored pegs that fit your board.
- Choose a picture mat and gather the pegs.
- Place the mat beside the pegboard, or position a compatible clear board over the printed grid.
- Match the peg colors and positions to the large circles. Large outlined white circles represent white pegs. Leave the holes represented by small black dots empty.
- Compare the completed picture with the mat and adjust any pegs as needed.
If a peg color is unavailable, choose a substitute and use it consistently throughout the picture.
🎨 More Ways to Use the Picture Mats
No pegboard is needed for these alternative activities! Children can work directly on the printed mats using:
- Play dough: Roll small balls in matching colors and gently press them onto the large circles.
- Pom-poms: Cover the large circles with matching pom-poms, using fingers or tweezers.
- Buttons or mini counters: Match the colors and place one piece on each large circle.
- Mini erasers: Place one small eraser on each large circle to recreate the picture’s shape.
- Round stickers: Peel and stick matching colored stickers onto the circles.
- Tissue paper: Scrunch small pieces into balls and glue them onto matching circles.
Choose materials that fit within the circles, and leave the small black dots uncovered.
🧠 Back to School Pegboard Patterns: Differentiation and Teaching Tips
For extra support, help children complete one row or a small section at a time. A compatible clear pegboard placed directly over the pattern can help children match the positions.
For an additional challenge, place the mat beside the board so children copy the picture independently. Extend the activity by counting the pieces of one color, comparing which colors were used most and least, or discussing how the pictured object is used at school.
🌟 Educational Benefits
- Fine motor control through picking up and placing small objects
- Hand-eye coordination and careful positioning
- Color matching and visual discrimination
- Spatial awareness and copying from a visual model
- Following directions and checking completed work
- Opportunities for counting, comparing quantities, and building school vocabulary
🖨️ Preparation and Materials
Print the mats on US Letter paper. Laminate them or place them in reusable pockets for activities with pegs, play dough, and loose materials. Use unlaminated copies for stickers and gluing.
To position a clear pegboard directly over a mat, print one page at 100% size and check that the holes align with the printed grid. Adjust the print scale if needed before printing the remaining pages. When copying from a mat placed beside the board, the printed grid does not need to match the board’s physical size.
This is a digital printable resource. Pegboards, pegs, and other hands-on materials are not included.
Happy Teaching! 😊
