✏️ How to Use the Short E Drawing and Writing Activities

1. Draw and Spell: Children follow the steps to draw, say the picture word, and tap the three circles as they identify its sounds. They write one letter in each box, then blend the sounds to read the word.
2. Read, Draw and Copy: Children read the sentence with support as needed, draw the main picture, and add the missing detail described in the sentence. They then copy the sentence onto the handwriting lines.
3. Draw and Write: Children draw the picture, then use the word bank and sentence starters to write about it. They can complete a sentence starter or compose their own sentence.
4. Separate Drawing and Writing Pages: Pair a full-page guide with Time to Draw! and Time to Write! for a larger drawing and writing with the amount of teacher support each child needs.

💡 Short E CVC Directed Drawing and Writing: Support and Extension

Name each picture together before children spell its word. Read the word banks and model sentences aloud as needed, and encourage children to say their complete sentences before writing. Extend the activity by inviting children to add a describing word or a second related sentence.

The target picture words focus on short e. Supporting sentences and word banks include other spelling patterns, so some children will need reading support. The word gem also introduces the soft-g sound, /j/.
