Valentine’s Day Literacy Centers for Kindergarten | Morning Tubs / Bins

1. Valentine’s Day clip the syllables

   To prepare this activity for use, print the cards, laminate them and then cut them apart. Household pegs, or other small clipping items such as unused hair clips or paper clips, can be used for this activity. Children will identify the number of syllables in each word and clip the circle with the correct answer.

2. Valentine’s Day clip the beginning sound (beginning digraphs: ch, th, sh)

   Print, laminate and cut out the picture cards. Children will correctly identify the beginning sound of each picture and to clip a clothes peg to show their answer. Alternatively, children can use dry-erase markers to colour the correct beginning sound.

3. Unscramble the word (CVC words)

   To prepare the cards for use, print, laminate and then cut them apart. Children will collect the letters shown on the card and arrange them to make the CVC word to match the picture.

4. Valentine’s Day long and short vowel word sort

   To prepare this activity, print, laminate and cut out all the pieces. Children will identify the type of vowel sound for each of the pictures on the envelopes and sort them to the correct mailbox.

5. Valentine’s Day chocolates middle sound sort (long vowels)

   To prepare the cards for use, print, laminate and then cut them apart. Children will identify the missing middle sound and sort each chocolate to the correct box.

6. Valentine bear spin and rhyme

   Print, laminate and cut out all the cards. You will need to supply children with a paper clip and a pencil to make a spinner. Children will lay out in a row the pink header cards. They will spin the paper clip and pencil spinner on the bear spinning card and read the word where it stops. Children will then find a matching rhyming picture and place it under the pink card it rhymes with. This continues until all the cards have been used up.

7. Build a conversation heart sight word (Pre-Primer and Primer words)

   To prepare this activity for use, print and cut out all the cards. Children will select a card, read the sight word on it and then build sight words using the heart letters provided.

8. Valentine’s Day write the room

   To prepare this activity, print, laminate and cut out all the vocabulary cards. Place the cards randomly around the room. Provide your children with a clip board with the recording page/s. Children will find the picture cards and write the word next to the matching picture on their recording page.
