Help beginning writers get started with September Directed Drawing and Writing! This printable packet combines drawing, labeling, and simple sentence writing for kindergarten and first grade. Familiar school, family, apple, and fall themes give children something concrete to draw and write about.

With 15 drawings and four differentiated formats, you can choose the support each child needs. Short, repeated sentence starters provide a familiar starting point, while pages without writing prompts give more confident writers space for their own ideas.

✏️ How to Use These September Writing Activities

Use September Directed Drawing and Writing for whole-class lessons, guided writing groups, writing centers after modeling, or homeschool learning. Print individual activities or combine selected pages to create a student book.

Provide pencils and coloring supplies, then model the drawing one step at a time. Children can color their finished pictures before completing the labeling or writing activity.

For supported writing, read and discuss the word bank and sentence starters together. Invite children to choose one starter, say their completed sentence aloud, and then dictate or write. The three starters offer choices, so children do not need to complete all three. They can also use their own words and ideas.

🌱 Differentiation for Beginning Writers

  • Beginning writers: Draw and discuss the picture, add labels using known letters or words, or dictate a sentence for an adult to record.
  • Developing writers: Complete a simple sentence starter using the word bank and adult support as needed.
  • Independent writers: Write their own sentences and add descriptive details using the pages without word banks and sentence starters.

🌟 Educational Benefits

  • Practices following directions and visual sequencing through six drawing steps.
  • Supports fine motor control through drawing, coloring, and writing.
  • Builds vocabulary and oral language through picture discussions.
  • Connects pictures with print through labeling and sentence writing.
  • Provides repeated sentence patterns to support beginning writers.
  • Offers opportunities for children to develop greater writing independence.

Happy Teaching! 😊
