Missing Alphabet Letters Worksheets | Cut and Paste Activity

These Missing Alphabet Letters Worksheets give preschool and kindergarten children hands on practice with alphabet order. Children identify which letters are missing and use the surrounding letters as clues.

I created this resource to combine alphabet recognition, writing and fine motor practice. Children write the missing letters before completing the alphabet sequences with cut and paste letter tiles. The school themed pictures make the worksheets inviting, while the black and white format keeps them easy to print.

About the Missing Alphabet Letters Worksheets

This resource contains 30 alphabet activity pages covering both uppercase and lowercase letters.

The first part of the resource includes:

  • 10 lowercase alphabet sequence worksheets
  • 10 uppercase alphabet sequence worksheets
  • Five missing letters on each page
  • Spaces for children to write the missing letters
  • Five matching cut and paste letter tiles

The second part contains 10 full alphabet grid activities. Each grid has 10 missing letters for children to find and replace with the matching letter tiles.

The variety of pages makes it easy to begin with a shorter alphabet sequence before moving on to a complete alphabet grid.

Write and Complete the Alphabet Sequence

The first set of worksheets gives children two opportunities to identify each missing letter.

Children begin by looking carefully at the alphabet sequence. A school-themed picture appears where each letter is missing. Children work out the missing letter and write it in the box beneath the picture.

They can then cut apart the five letter tiles at the bottom of the page and paste each tile into its matching space.

I like this format because children do more than copy a row of letters. They need to look at the letters on either side of each picture and think about which letter belongs between them.

The lowercase and uppercase pages can be introduced separately. This allows children to work with the letter format they are currently learning without making the activity overwhelming.

Complete the Full Alphabet Grid

The full alphabet grids provide a little more challenge.

Each page displays the alphabet in order, with 10 empty squares. The 10 missing letter tiles are provided at the bottom of the worksheet.

Children look across each row, identify the missing letter and find its matching tile. They can place the tile into the empty square and check the letters before and after it.

Only 10 letters are missing from each grid, so children still have plenty of surrounding letters to use as clues.

I recommend asking children to position all the letter tiles before they begin gluing. This gives them an opportunity to check their work and move a tile if they have placed it incorrectly.

Once all the tiles are in position, children can read through the completed alphabet from beginning to end.

How to Use the Missing Alphabet Letters Worksheets

When introducing the activity, I would model the first missing letter with the child.

We would point to each letter and say the alphabet slowly. When we reached an empty square, we would pause and look at the letters on either side.

For example, if the empty square appears between a and c, I might ask:

“What letter comes after a?”

“What letter comes before c?”

“Can you find the b tile?”

This encourages the child to use the alphabet sequence rather than guessing from the loose tiles.

A simple way to complete the activity is:

  1. Say the letters in the row aloud.
  2. Stop when you reach a missing letter.
  3. Look at the letters before and after the space.
  4. Find the matching letter tile.
  5. Place all the tiles before using glue.
  6. Read the completed alphabet to check the answers.

For the first set of worksheets, children can write the missing letters before completing the cut and paste section.

Skills Practised

These missing alphabet letters worksheets provide practice with:

  • Uppercase and lowercase letter recognition
  • Alphabetical order
  • Identifying which letter comes before or after another letter
  • Writing uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Visual discrimination
  • Cutting and gluing
  • Fine motor control
  • Hand and eye coordination
  • Following directions
  • Checking completed work

These activities focus on alphabet knowledge and sequencing. I would use them alongside explicit letter-sound and phonics instruction.

Easy Ways to Differentiate the Activity

The worksheets can be adjusted to suit children at different stages of alphabet learning.

For children who need more support, provide an alphabet strip that they can use as a reference. Point to each letter together and encourage the child to say the sequence aloud.

You can also offer only two or three loose tiles at a time. This reduces the number of choices and allows the child to concentrate on alphabet order.

If cutting is difficult or the main learning goal is letter sequencing, an adult can prepare the tiles beforehand. The child can then focus on matching, positioning and gluing the letters.

Children who are ready for more of a challenge can complete the worksheet without an alphabet strip. You can also ask them to name the letter that comes before and after each tile they place.

Ways to Use the Worksheets

These activities can be used for:

  • Literacy centers
  • Morning work
  • Small group instruction
  • Alphabet intervention
  • Independent practice
  • Early finisher activities
  • Homework
  • Homeschool learning
  • Back to school review

The school theme makes the worksheets particularly useful at the beginning of the school year, but they can be used whenever children need extra alphabet sequencing practice.

Preparation Tips

  • Print the activity page you would like the child to complete. Each child will also need a pencil, child-safe scissors and glue.
  • Before children begin, demonstrate how to cut off the complete letter strip and then cut between the individual tiles.
  • Encourage children to keep their loose tiles beneath the worksheet so the pieces remain easy to see and do not become mixed with another child’s tiles.
  • For a reusable literacy center, the activity pages and tiles can be laminated. Children can position the tiles over the missing spaces instead of gluing them permanently.
