My Pumpkin Preschool Centers give children plenty of ways to explore letters, numbers, shapes, and patterns through play. They can fill pumpkins with seeds, match rhyming pictures, build words, and clip their answers while practicing fine motor skills.
The complete 146 page packet includes 18 activities for preschool, PreK, transitional kindergarten, and kindergarten. Choose the centers that suit your children, then introduce more as they become familiar with each activity. They work well for fall learning centers, morning tubs, small groups, or learning at home.
Pumpkin Preschool Centers for Fine Motor and Prewriting Practice
1. Pumpkin Fine Motor Practice Mats
These five pumpkin mats invite children to cover each circle with a small manipulative. The glasses pumpkin shown here has colored counters on the leaves and pumpkin, with more spaces ready to fill.
You can use counters, pom poms, buttons, or other suitable manipulatives. Picking up and placing each piece gives children practice with controlled hand movements and hand eye coordination. Try offering just one mat and a small tray of materials to begin.
2. Pumpkin Prewriting Tracing Cards
The nine tracing cards include different paths for children to follow from left to right. Use a dry erase marker on laminated cards, or invite children to follow a line with a finger before tracing it.
For another way to practice, place a card beside a shallow sand tray. Children can use the printed path as a model and draw a similar line in the sand. This adds variety while keeping the focus on purposeful movements.

3. Pumpkin Alphabet Tracing Cards
Each of the 26 alphabet cards shows an uppercase and lowercase letter with directional arrows. Children can trace the letters on the card, then try forming them in a sand tray.
Choose letters you have already introduced and model where each stroke begins. The cards can stay together on a ring or be set out individually with the writing materials.
4. Pumpkin Seed Letter Matching
Children match the uppercase and lowercase letters on the seed pieces to the letter pair on each pumpkin. Start with a small selection of letters so children can compare the pieces without having to search through the entire alphabet.
The photos show two ways to use this center. Children can place the seeds directly on the mat, or you can attach the pieces to clothespins for clipping around the pumpkin. Both versions practice letter recognition and matching.
5. Pumpkin Wagon Beginning Sounds
These wagons turn beginning sound practice into a picture sorting activity. Children name a picture, listen for its first sound, and find the matching letter wagon. In the example, the apple, ant, and astronaut pictures belong with the letter a.
Before children sort independently, name the pictures together and model how to listen for the beginning sound. Introduce just two or three wagons at first, then add more choices when children are ready.
6. Pumpkin Rhyming Match
Children join two pumpkin halves by finding pictures whose names rhyme. The packet includes ten rhyming puzzles, with pairs such as car and star or snake and cake.
Say both picture names aloud before deciding whether they match. Children do not need to read printed words to take part. For a smaller challenge, offer one pumpkin half and two possible matches, then invite children to say the completed pair with you.
7. Pumpkin Sight Word Spelling
This center includes 40 preprimer sight word cards, a spelling mat, and pumpkin seed letter cards. Children choose a word card and arrange the letters to build the same word. The photo shows the word here.
Use words you have already taught and read each one together before children build it. You can discuss the familiar letter and sound connections as you work. This is an option for children who are ready for word building; other children can continue with the letter matching centers.

8. Pumpkin Number Tracing Cards
The number cards cover 1 to 10 and show children how to form each numeral. Children can trace with a dry erase marker or use the card as a model for writing in sand.
To connect the written number with a quantity, set out a few counters beside the card. After forming the numeral, children can count out that many objects.
9. Pumpkin Seed Counting Mats
Each mat displays a number from 1 to 10 on the pumpkin stem. Children read the number, count out the matching quantity, and place the pieces on the pumpkin.
Use the printable seed pieces or substitute counters, as shown in the two photos. Encourage children to touch or move one piece for each number they say, then count the whole collection again to check. Begin with smaller quantities and gradually introduce the remaining mats.
10. Pumpkin Number Sense Crates
Children sort pumpkin cards into numbered crates by matching different representations of the same number. The cards use numerals, tally marks, finger patterns, and ten frames for numbers 1 to 10.
For example, the crate labeled 5 collects pumpkins that show five in different ways. Start with two crates and a few cards, then ask children to explain how they know where each pumpkin belongs.
11. Pumpkin Ordering by Size
Children compare the pumpkin pieces and arrange them from smallest to biggest. The packet includes a mat with pumpkin outlines to guide placement and another version without the outlines for more independent ordering.
Talk about each choice as children work: Which pumpkin is smaller? Which one should come next? This center offers a simple way to practice comparison words as well as sorting by size.
12. Pumpkin Shape Clip Cards
These cards feature ten shapes. Children look at the pumpkin at the top of a card, compare the choices below, and clip the shape that matches.
Invite children to name the shape or describe what they notice, such as straight sides or a curved edge. Pointing to an answer first can help children focus on the matching task before adding the clothespin.
13. Pumpkin and Crate Color Matching
Children match colored pumpkins to their corresponding crates. The set includes eleven colors, giving you plenty of options for a small sorting center or a larger group activity.
Begin with a few clearly different colors, then introduce additional crates. You can also invite children to find classroom objects that match the colors they have sorted. The crate labels provide an opportunity to notice color words while the main task remains color matching.
14. Pumpkin AB Patterns
The five pattern strips use alternating fall pictures, including pumpkins, cupcakes, pie, donuts, and drinks. Children say the pattern aloud and select the picture that belongs in the empty space.
Attach the answer pictures to clothespins, as shown, or let children place them directly in the boxes. Once they understand the repeating pair, they can make a new AB pattern with two kinds of classroom objects.

15. Which Picture Is Different?
These four cards ask children to look closely at a row of similar pictures and find the one with a different detail. Children can point to their answer or mark it with a clothespin.
Ask what they noticed before moving to the next card. Naming the difference encourages children to explain their observations instead of simply guessing.
16. What Doesn’t Belong?
This activity uses four cards to explore how objects can be grouped. Children identify the picture that does not belong with the others and explain their choice.
A useful prompt is, “These three belong together because…” Give children time to describe the connection they see. Their explanation helps you understand how they are sorting and comparing the pictures.
17. Pumpkin Sequencing Cards
The packet includes two sequencing activities: a four part sequence for making pumpkin pie and a six part sequence showing how a pumpkin grows.
Children arrange the pictures on the matching mat, then talk through what happens first, next, and last. You can place the first picture as a starting point or leave a few cards in position for children to complete. Once the sequence is finished, invite them to retell it using the pictures for support.
18. Pumpkin Shadow Matching
The twelve picture and shadow pairs encourage children to focus on shape and outline. Children compare the colored pictures with the silhouettes and find each match.
Begin with a few pairs that look quite different from one another, then add more choices. You can use the pieces as a matching game or attach the pictures to clothespins, as shown in the photo.
How to Prepare Your Pumpkin Preschool Centers
You do not need to prepare all 18 activities at once. Choose a few that match the skills your children are practicing and introduce the others over time.
- Print the pages you need. The PDF is formatted for A4 paper. If you are using US Letter paper, choose Fit to Page and check a sample before printing the full set.
- Laminate reusable pages and cut out the pieces. Keep the cards for each activity together in a pouch or small container.
- Add the materials for that center. Depending on the activity, this might include counters, clothespins, dry erase markers, or a sand tray.
- Model one example together. Show children how to complete the activity and where to return the pieces when they finish.
For a simple rotation, start with one fine motor activity, one literacy activity, and one math activity. Change the letters, numbers, or cards available as children become more confident. The same resources can support a small group lesson and later become familiar practice in a morning tub.
